We will begin our City Tour on foot in the San Lázaro neighborhood, passing by the San Francisco Church and its surroundings until we reach the Plaza de Armas. This square is surrounded by three granite portals with brick and lime vaults, and at its center stands a bronze fountain with three levels, crowned by a 16th-century soldier figure known as "El Tuturutu."
Our tour continues with a visit to the exterior of the Basilica Cathedral, one of the earliest neoclassical religious constructions in the city. Although it was destroyed by a fire in 1844, it was reconstructed in 1868. Its 107-meter-long façade is adorned with 70 classical columns, two imposing towers, and bronze medallions.
The next stop will be the Convent of the Society of Jesus, a magnificent example of religious architecture. Its church, built in 1573, and the cloisters, featuring arches carved in sillar, stand out for their splendor. The exuberant baroque style of its walls, domes, and pilasters, along with the gold-leaf-covered altars and retablos, offers a unique experience.
We will conclude our tour at the Santa Catalina Monastery, founded in 1580. This 20,000 m² complex is a true sillar city, revealing the historical and cultural richness of Arequipa.
